Farming can be dangerous, suggests this danger decal on some John Deere farming equipment. And how!

View Article  City girl shops at Gebo's!

Gebo's is a local store here in McKinney. At one time it was pretty rural, as are most locales where you might find a farm supply store. You never see farm supply stores in New York City, for example. Anyway, with all the growth around here, the corner where Gebo's is located is being developed with big box retail, such as Super Target, Circuit City, and a Lowe's. I'm happy to report that Gebo's did not sell out, nor were they shoved out via emminent domain. They are staying.

Given that, I decided it was time to pay a visit to Gebo's.

They were not joking about the farm part. I walked in and browsed about a little, through the huntin' supplies, "toys", denim overalls, trapping equipment, etc. An employee with some sort of nasty cough, probably a farming-related disease, offered assistance. I asked where I could find the deer corn aisle and he told me that deer corn was out back (like, duh!) and offered to fetch me a 50 pound bag.

Meanwhile, I was browsing around the cash register area, and came across some small plastic animals and minature metal farming implements. LD is nuts about horses so I selected a $2 plastic foal for her, as a small reward for not chewing her fingernails, and placed it on the counter.

The cashier lady asked how she could help me.
"I'd like to buy this little horse."
I got a strange look, "Is that all for you today?"
I explained further, "I am also getting a fifty pound bag of deer corn, but it isn't for this little horse."

Another strange look, and a very slight chuckle. Then I paid, slipped the horse in my pocket, as the employee loaded the deer corn into my car.

What will Gebo's role be in the middle of Circuit City, Super Target, and Lowe's? Will farmers be braving the nightmare of shopping traffic to buy jeans, jerky and tractor tires at Gebo's?
